Verify document identity with hashes
Use the recorded hash to identify exact PDF bytes and distinguish a signed file from a later revision.
A hash identifies bytes
A content hash changes when the underlying file changes. This makes it useful for matching an artifact to the associated signing record. It does not by itself explain the document’s terms or establish a person’s authority to sign.
Compare the right file
Use the completed PDF associated with the envelope and its certificate. Keep the source PDF and later revisions clearly labeled so they are not substituted during a verification check.
- Identify the completed artifact.
- Compare its digest with the recorded hash.
- Retain the certificate and signing record with it.
Investigate differences
If the bytes differ, preserve both files and inspect which version was changed. A visual resemblance between PDFs is not the same as matching content hashes.
